#Sagetv for windows home server software
The license you get with the SageTV software should cover installing it on both your PC and the MSS, you do not have to purchase an additional license.
#Sagetv for windows home server install
If you are looking to actually stream live tv via the tuner, then yes, you would use the PC install (on the extender you can choose what source you want to use). If you are using the SageTV Extender to simply stream saved files, then you can get away with using the MSS install. I have the SageTV software installed on both my PC and MSS. Really you can have the software installed on either or both. As long as any content you are recording using the HD-PVR or tuner is being saved on the MSS all should work, but yes the tuner/HD PVR would need to be running through your main PC (although I don't own a Hauppauge HD PVR, i assume that is the one you are referencing, I have heard that it is a beast in drawing PC computing power, so it definitely wouldn't be able to run on the MSS) Now if the transcoding was being done at the PC/MSS level, then I would say that there would be no way that the MSS could handle it.ģ. The MSS should be strong enough, as the transcoding is not done by the software but instead it is done at the extender. To my knowledge the software is supposed to only manage the media content that is stored on the MSSĢ. Here are my thougts based on my experience:ġ.
With my HD-PVR and STB connected to my desktop PC, I'm thinking that's where the Sagetv software should be installed and not on my MSS.Īnyway, I have more questions but dependant on the answers above. I don't think the MSS can support the HD-PVR and STBs connected directly to it and I can't use an HDHomerun or similar devices. Is the MSS powerful or suitable enough to run the Sagetv software?ģ. Am I supposed to have all of my equipment (STB, HD-DVR) connected to my MSS? Or, is this software only intended to manage the media content that's stored on the MSS?Ģ. The Sagetv software is the Media Center software. (I'll likely post on their forum as well)ġ. Please help me understand the role or intention of SageTV for WHS. This is going to be a noobish question but I don't care. We don't have Tivo HD in Canada so that's not an option either.
NFL, NBA, and hockey seasons will be starting soon enough. I've tried the Slingbox and I've been overall impressed by it but it doesn't stream at HD resolutions and I'm reaching out to see if there's something better out there for streaming HD content.Īnyway, sorry for the long-winded post but any input that can be provided will be graciously appreciated. I have a feeling that will be a challenge for the MSS to do since it has to encode the stream and send it out. Now that you have the background, what I was exploring is using the Hauppauge HD-PVR to capture HD content to my MSS for later viewing and seeing if Sagetv's Placeshifter product can work as advertised to stream the HD content over the net. In addition, I want to record HD content which it can't do.
I've also tried the slingbox and it's been great for what it advertises to do but doesn't give me the ability to record content to my PC/MSS for later viewing off of the PVR. I've tried the Hauppauge HD-PVR connected to my digital cable HD PVR box. As a result, we need to get digital cable or satellite boxes from our providers where the channels are encrypted by the provider. border, very limited, and not worth talking about). In Canada, we don't get OTA HD or ATSC channels (OK, we do, but need to live close to the U.S. I think this is going to turn into a Sagetv thread.
